Intent: Preserving Heritage Through Design
Markus Ludwig our co-designer at Glasbaustein-Lichtwerk, grew up loving Sunday dinners at his grandmother’s house, remembering her delicate porcelain dinner service with fondness. When she passed away, he inherited the elegant heirloom plates and cups but wasn’t sure how to honor them. His intent became clear: he wanted to transform that cherished porcelain into something new, something unique, an artful lamp that would carry his grandmother’s spirit forward. Markus reached out to me, and this is how the dream started, hoping to create a light that would shine with memory and family warmth.
Obstacle: Rediscovering Heirlooms in Lockdown
The journey took an unexpected turn when the COVID-19 lockdown began. Separated by distance and confined at home, Markus found himself with extra time to sort through family belongings. One quiet afternoon he discovered an old box tucked away in the attic – inside it lay his grandmother’s porcelain service, long untouched. The sight of those familiar patterns and gold trims brought a rush of memories, bittersweet emotions and a practical thought: "Damn! The only reason I have not used this service is because I am afraid to destroy it in the dishwasher!", which brought the idea of transforming it into a practical object and giving it a new meaning.
In this vintage Polaroid snapshot, Markus smiles beside his grandmother, her warm gaze full of pride. The photo captures a beloved family moment, and recalling it became the emotional spark for the whole project.
Seeing their shared laughter on one of the many pictures he did found along with her porcelain service made Markus even more determined to carry her legacy forward by turning the porcelain into light.
It is with renewed inspiration, that Markus and our studio team began planning the lamp. We carefully unpacked each plate and cup, noting how the thin porcelain could glow when backlit. The challenge was to assemble the pieces in a way that felt cohesive and beautiful and yet taking their fragility into the thinking to make sure to not break any in the process of making the mural lamp structure.
Resolution: Crafting a Lamp from Porcelain Legacy
Working together, we designed a custom mural Service Lamp using the inherited china from his grandma. Each porcelain piece was gently cleaned and arranged into a sculptural composition on a metal frame. We chose a wall-mounted design so the lamp could illuminate the room like a glowing mural. When we tested the light, the porcelain plates glowed with a soft, golden light reminiscent of candlelight at a family dinner.
It took days, which transformed into weeks, to adjust the layout and wiring, but finally the lamp was ready. Installed in Markus’s home, it became both a lighting fixture and a piece of art. Now, when the lamp is switched on, the fine patterns on the plates come alive in light and shadow. For Markus, this glowing arrangement is more than decor; it’s a tribute to his grandmother and the beginning of a new adventure for Glasbaustein-Lichtwerk.
In the end, the project achieved exactly what Markus intended. The once-forgotten porcelain service found a new purpose, and the lamp carries forward the warmth of family gatherings. At Glasbaustein, we are reminded that objects can tell stories. By weaving these heirlooms into a new design, we illuminated not just a room but a family heritage.
Lighting this legacy underscores the power of design and light to keep memories alive. Each time the lamp shines, it proves that heritage isn’t just passed down: it can be reborn in creative form. Markus’s project shows us that carrying family history forward can be as simple and profound as turning a cherished plate into a glowing piece of art.
