Frequently asked questions
What is Glasbaustein?
Our glass blocks weren’t born in designer studios. They once lived in stairwells of East Berlin, in Kreuzberg workshops, in silent factory windows along the Spree, around the doors of shops or residential houses, in the countryside, creating some beam of colors through some grey times. They carried daylight into cold corridors and post-war ruins. Today, we reuse them, polishing the dust of history off their surface, adding warmth, and let them glow again in safe spaces, witnesses of Berlin’s past and present.
Is the lamp handmade?
The lamp is handmade, the stones are carefully selected in flea market or purchased with the help of antique dealers to find the historical piece that will illuminate your living room. The steel stands are made by a Berlin-based blacksmith, a hard and cold heavy base to support the fragile warm lighting resting on it. All the components are assembled one order after the other, depending on the stock we can find.
What makes the Glasbaustein lamp sustainable?
We are reusing stones that are charged with memory and history, rather than producing new ones. With the support of the blacksmith, we are reusing the T-shaped beam used for construction, and we try to maintain a short cycle production for all the products we make.
Where are the lamp from?
Each lamp we make are either on customer's location in Germany for the Service lamps and the Standlone lamps are made at home in Berlin.
